Biography

Chris has represented leading technology companies in high-stakes litigations, including Intel, Samsung, Philips, and Canon.  He has litigated patents across a broad range of technologies, including wireless/cellular standards, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), semiconductors, computer architecture, RFID, computer security, medical devices, supplements for treating macular degeneration, hearing aid technologies, and signal processing.  He has also represented individual inventors and smaller companies with strong patent portfolios.

Experience

  • Represented Koninklijke Philips N.V. and U.S. Philips Corp. in multi-defendant litigation concerning patents tied to graphical user interfaces, streaming technologies, and digital content protection implemented in smartphones and tablets running Windows and Android.  Following favorable claim construction rulings and successfully defeating several summary judgment motions and USPTO collateral challenges, secured a series of settlements affirming the value of Philips’ IP portfolio.
  • Represented Bausch Health in a patent dispute against Vitamin Health in the Western District of New York involving a nutritional supplement for treating advanced macular degeneration. Won summary judgment of infringement and no invalidity, and the matter settled favorably thereafter.
  • Represented LoanStreet in a combined trademark infringement and defamation action in the Southern District of New York.  Successfully obtained dismissal of all counterclaims and prevailed on a Rule 12(c) motion, with the court holding the defendant liable for defamation per se.
  • Defended Intel in a multi-patent infringement case in the Eastern District of Texas relating to computer-processor technologies.  Obtained key admissions from the plaintiff’s witnesses in discovery, which led the plaintiff to voluntarily dismiss its claims with prejudice, securing a full defense win.
  • Defended ContentGuard Holdings, Inc. in four IPR proceedings before the PTAB, targeting patents covering digital rights management technologies.  The Board sided entirely with ContentGuard, rejecting all validity challenges brought by ZTE and preserving the patents in full.
  • Represented a leading technology company in actions before the ITC and the District of Delaware against HTC, asserting 20 patents covering smartphone-related innovations.  The commission issued an exclusion order blocking HTC’s infringing products.  The litigation concluded with a confidential settlement and license agreement.
  • Defended Intel in the Northern District of Georgia in a single-patent case involving computer processing technologies.  Obtained summary judgment of invalidity and adopted Intel’s claim constructions, which led the plaintiff to concede non-infringement.
  • Represented Siemens in a District of Delaware case involving two patents on programmable hearing aid technologies. After building strong non-infringement and invalidity defenses, the matter was resolved successfully through settlement.
